The words of this video are written by Levi Teare. Here is his commentary:
Iwrote Dark Eyes on a plane ride home. It was too short of a trip for me to fall asleep. So I got out my notebook and pen. Amidst my overthinking of what story to tell and what the first line to use. I thought to myself “Forget this,” and just started writing. Dark eyes were the first words that came to mind.
By some miracle or misfortune, I had sat by myself on both flights, an empty seat on either side of me. Naturally, I was lonely. The whole poem was a stream of consciousness. It didn’t abide by the laws of our world, hence the stars fall around ancient ruins where a party is going on. Daphne is a woman who exudes bold characteristics and is self-confident. She knows that she’s worth a lot but doesn’t flaunt it. Paris is self-conscious, he doesn’t know where he belongs or even why he’s at the party.
The contrast between the characters, between my two halves, makes this poem interesting. The plain and honest way they speak was a fun use of dialogue and reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s writing style. I’m not sure what everything means. So you, the reader, discern what’s going on in my brain. Think about ruins, stars, loneliness, love, Paris, and Daphne. And consider how they might relate to you.
